Outdoor Monitor Viewability Guide

Most monitors are designed to be used indoors. Often, they become neigh-unusable when taken outdoors as image quality suffers. Working on a monitor without a clear picture can lead to squinting, which over time can cause headaches and eye strain. Furthermore, trying to view a dim screen can prompt you to adjust your seating position, potentially leading to neck and back discomfort. You may not immediately notice it, but your productivity will suffer.

This article examines the two main factors that harm image quality in an outdoor setting: screen finish and brightness.

Screen Finish

Screens come in two finishes: matte and glossy. In glossy displays, light is passed through the glass unaltered. When there is a single strong source of light being reflected in a glossy screen, it can overpower the light emitted by the monitor. This can be very distracting, and could make productivity impossible.

This problem is solved by applying matte coating, which scatters the reflections. As the reflection hits the screen, it gets 'broken up' and reflects unevenly and in multiple directions. By breaking it up, the reflection becomes much less disruptive.

Screen Brightness

Standard monitors — whether portable or full-size — usually have a brightness of 250 to 300 nits and are not designed to compete with natural light. Monitors sold here at Volgia are brighter and more capable for outdoor use, but still not bright enough to compete with harsh sunlight. See more below.

☁️ Overcast Conditions:

On cloudy days, a monitor with a brightness of 400 to 500 nits is typically sufficient. This level of brightness helps offset the ambient light and makes your screen easier to view without causing eye strain.

All monitors we sell exceed this brightness.

⛱️ Working in the Shade:

If you’re working in the shade, a monitor with around 500 to 700 nits of brightness can provide a clear display. This compensates for the increased ambient light found even in shaded outdoor areas.

The monitors we sell tend to be in this range.

☀️ Direct Sunlight:

In direct sunlight, a standard monitor can be very difficult to read. For these conditions, a high-brightness monitor of 1000 nits or more is recommended. This will ensure that your screen remains visible, even in bright sunlight.

We do not currently sell monitors of this brightness. Once the technology gets there, we will.

At Volgia, we offer monitors specifically designed for outdoor use. Our high-brightness monitors ensure that no matter where you choose to work (except in full sunshine ☀️), you’ll have a comfortable viewing experience. This allows you to enjoy the benefits of working outdoors without compromising on your comfort or the quality of your work. See our monitors in action here.
